Dim Sum: Rong Mao Coffee Shop, Jonker Street
Published by Kelvin Wong March 2nd, 2007 in Food Reviews, Malacca.(Non-Halal Post)

The fifth-part of the Malacca CNY series will bring you back to traditional chinese breakfast culture, dim sum at Rong Mao Coffee Shop (荣茂茶室) at Jonker Street; to be precise, its at Jln Tukang Besi (Blacksmith’s Road). I wouldn’t just consider Dim Sum as just a type of cuisine, but its actually part of an ancient culture practiced ages ago since the old days in China. The story of Dim Sum origins back to the Imperial Palaces where concubine prepares Dim Sum to touch the heart (点心) of the emperor. Though small the quantity of food is, the taste of it explodes a distinctive flavor till it can make you feel good inside.

The main stuff you can get from the coffeeshop is the Har Kaw (prawn dumplings), Siew Mai (meat dumplings), Yu Mai (Fish Balls) and last but not least, the Pau. The Pau in Rong Mao is quite delicious as its not quite fat and oily but full of dark gravy and meat slices. It somehow reminded me of the chunky meat minus the fat layer in Tong Po Rou (pork stew in soya sauce) and we just couldnt resist it and ordered extra Pau. All in all the other dishes tasted well and in par with other budget Dim Sums I had elsewhere in KL/PJ.

The thing is somehow CNY brought tons of visitors here which are mostly from other states or Singaporeans. So the place is quite packed during the normal and late breakfast hours, so you might have to come early to get a table. The bill totalled at around RM20+ for five persons that time, which is considered cheap compared to KL standards. In the end, this place is highly recommended should you have cravings for dim sum and happened to be around Malacca.
